Gul was a Cardassian military rank and title positioned in the Cardassian hierarchy between glinn and legate.

They were often those officers who served as the commander of a vessel, from warships down to freighters, a space station, or a labor camp. (DS9: "Emissary", "Duet", et al.) Guls were also known to have additional responsibilities, such as leading an Order, or acting as military governor of an occupied territory. (DS9: "Emissary", "The Maquis, Part I")

In addition to their regular salary, when assigned as a freighter captain, a ship's gul routinely took a cut of the profits from the cargo that was being transported. These guls were also often expected to entertain guests aboard their ships. (DS9: "Return to Grace")

Joret Dal bemoaned the state of the Cardassian military in 2370, characterizing it as having become "little more than a platform for ambitious guls hoping to make their reputations in battle." (TNG: "Lower Decks")

Upon hearing of Toran's promotion to gul that year, Elim Garak surmised it to be an indication of how desperate the situation on Cardassia was. (DS9: "Profit and Loss")

In 2374, after selecting a 2327 vintage of kanar, Damar assured Quark he could afford it on a gul's salary. Quark wondered why he would get promoted after starting a fight at Quark's. (DS9: "Behind the Lines")
